Pilonidal cyst is a relatively common problem especially in young adults. Men are affected 2-4 times more often than women. Pilonidal cysts occur more frequently in people who sit for extended periods, such as truck drivers, and the problem tends to recur. It is almost always located near the coccyx, at the top of the buttock slit. Pilonidal cyst is an acquired disease, with hairs growing in the area of the medullary slit being the cause of the problem. It usually occurs when the hairs pierce the skin and then integrate
When the coccyx bladder is infected, a mass (abscess) is created. Signs and symptoms of an infected bladder include:
- Pain
- Skin redness
- Drainage of the pus or blood from an opening in the skin
- Bad odor from drainage of pus
The Pilonidal cyst can be surgically removed through a small incision.
